MUSTAFA KAZEMI & BEAR: CHAPTER 2 - THE BEGINNING

CHAPTER II - THE BEGINNING, SORT OF

________________________________

IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT.
LOL. Aren't they all.

I remember feeling a bit restless that night following that first meeting with Mustafa, but what else is new. I had recently started a new book, and as usual I had a number of other projects in the works and all seemed to be going really well. But, as I said, I often get really restless when I am starting new projects and that night particularly so.

I am a big believer in harbingers and instincts and all that, but I was missing the ping if you will. Just something...

Then I remembered I had not talked to a friend in California, a journalist by the name of Al...for a few days as I recall, and wondered how he was, so I got on Twitter.

There he was of course. He practically lives on Twitter. But he had a conversation going with someone I didn't know. I sat, waiting for a chance to jump in and then did.

HAHA. That's me.

Oddly, although I had gone online looking for Al and here we were, his friend and fellow journalist and I started chatting. Not for long but as it turns out JUST ENOUGH.

The chat ended, we all went our separate ways, and I thought that was the end of it.
I really did. I had NO inkling the turn my life was about to take, or the role Mustafa would play in it. Nothing.

HOW WRONG I WAS. OH how wrong I was.
This was the catalyst for how the entirety of my life has evolved from that moment on.

EVERYTHING I HAVE DONE SINCE AND PROBABLY EVER WILL DO...

is a direct result of that brief conversation with this Afghan dude I had NEVER HEARD OF until that night several years ago. He has profoundly affected my life in ways NOBODY ELSE ever has and opened up my eyes, ears, mind, and life to a world I knew nothing about. The Middle East. Amazing, but that is life and it is very typical of mine. I tend to fall into these things. I suppose it is the investigative journalist in me, but whatever it is...

THIS is the story of MY life told in events far better than my narrative ever could.

Yes it is true that I sorta trip and stumble and fall into shit. BIG KLUTZ das me and I can't take a lot of credit for being prescient when it comes to Mustafa and what then began to happen. More along the lines of being along for the ride. (Occasionally falling overboard too.
Like I said, I AM a klutz.)
